This study-unit will introduce the basic principles of trauma-informed care, with a focus on childhood adversities and how they may manifest themselves in the behaviour of children and young adults in care. This study-unit will give participants the opportunity to learn relevant theoretical frameworks such as attachment theory and apply them to their day to day care with their clients.

Study-unit Aims

The aim of this study-unit is to give participants the opportunity to learn the basic principles of trauma-informed care so that their practice so that their practice is more strength-based and focused on building the resilience of the clients in their care. The unit also aims to help participants become more self-reflexive to use clinical supervision more effectively and to be better able to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team.


Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • recognise what may be signs and symptoms of trauma in the asessment of individuals', families, and groups.
  • describe key theoretical frameworks such as attachment theory that can be employed to understand the legacy of trauma.
  • comprehend and review published literature on trauma.

Learning Outcomes: Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • respond to trauma behavior that is more strenghts- based and resilience- focused rather than a response that looks for symptoms and pathology, or one that assigns blame.
  • demonstrate the ability to understand and value the work of other professionals in trauma work and collaboratively work across systems for the benefit of the clients.
  • reflect on how one's own behaviour and that of colleagues can be understood from a trauma-informed framework.
  • employ more effectively clinical supervision.
